Abstract
Heavy modern beam trawls are often considered as being very destructive for the marine habitat. However, until recently reliable data and observations to assess this disturbance have been lacking. The present paper describes experiments with modem commercial beam trawls equipped with chain matrices to measure their physical impact on the seabed. The effects studied concern the pressure exerted by the gears on the seabed, the changes in seabed topography, the disturbance of the superficial seabed sediments and the penetration depth of the gears.
