Abstract
The purpose of this chapter will not be to attempt to provide a review of all that is known about the migration patterns of the complete spectrum of North American shorebird species. An introduction outlining the general migration systems in the New World is followed by an account of recent advances in our knowledge of the migration systems of particular species with differing strategies, using each species to illustrate various aspects of the biology of shorebird migration. The emphasis being on recent advances in our knowledge of distribution and routes. This review concentrates mostly on sandpipers, members of the genus Calidris.
