Abstract
A continuously recording apparatus for measuring long-term oxygen uptake in burrow-dwelling invertebrates is described. As the animals inside the respiration chamber are able to display their normal behaviour, the rates of oxygen uptake measured by this apparatus are more in accordance with the consumption of animals in their natural habitat. Under constant environmental conditions the bivalve Macoma balthica may show distinct periods of feeding and rhythmic respiration, often alternating with long periods of inactivity.
