| Abstract |
Observations have been made on the burrows and burrowing behaviour of the mud-dwelling goby, L. friesii (Collett), from Loch Torridon, Scotland. Burrows produced by the fish usually consisted of shallow 'U' -shaped tunnels with 2 openings. Studies in aquaria showed that the burrows were excavated by the removal of mud pellets in the mouth of the fish. A small number of gobies were found in the empty or occupied burrows of the crustaceans Nephrops norvegicus (L.) and Goneplax rhomboides (L.). In the area of Loch Torridon investigated the density was one goby per 2.3 m2. L. friesii is probably equally common in other muddy habitats in Scottish coastal water, but is seldom caught in fishing nets because of the burrowing habit. |
