Abstract
Considering the importance of Artemia in aquaculture, for feeding larval stages of fish and shrimps, the chemical composition of cysts of some Italian populations were analyzed. The cysts were collected during 2 years ( 1986 and 1987) in salt ponds and saltworks along the ltalian coasts. The tested cysts came from six areas of northern Italy (Cervia and Comacchio populations), of central Italy (Tarquinia population), and of southern Italy (Cagliari, Carlo Forte, and San Antioco populations). All the samples were checked for their contents in protein, lipids, ash, and fatty acids. The results showed a substantial homogeneity in the composition (protein 48%-52%, lipids 1 %), except the San Antioco population that showed a particular fatty acid composition. In the last population the 16:0 fatty acid was 42.9% and therefore it accounted for the higher percentage of saturated acids (55%) than that of monounsaturated ones (34.5%), among these the 18:1 was prevalent (21.3%).
