Abstract
    Investigations of ship collisions of national and international Marine Investigation Institutions as well as practical experiences in ship handling show that there still is an urgent need for further quantification of the safe passing distance and the modelling of ship-ship interactions during overtaking situations. In restricted and narrow waters collisions occur especially during overtaking manoeuvres due to hydrodynamic interactions between the ships mainly. They often lead to damages of the ships and sometimes even the total closing of the entire fairway leading to massive economic losses. Within this paper methods and results regarding the improvement of the simulation of critical phases during overtaking and encounter situations are introduced. A test sample for training module development will be discussed using the higher quality of the mathematical models in ship handling simulator allowing for a more realistic training to avoid the risks in these situations. Furthermore a concept is described to derive information for a qualified assistance of ships‟ crews in order to estimate the safe passing distance for reducing the risk of collision in overtaking situations.
