Abstract
A Ship-to-Ship (STS) lightering operation is carried out and controlled by human operators in order to transfer crude oil or LNG from one vessel to another. The final approach phase of two STS vessels with speed underway is particularly critical in order to avoid steel-to-steel contact. Operational safety and efficiency require sufficient instrumental measurements and adequate human operations. A major objective in safe navigation and operation with the ongoing research activity on STS operations is to develop and implement a guidance and decision-support system for the ship navigation officers. In order to develop and implement such a system, the measurement of the relative distances, heading and speeds are important. In this paper, a measurement system using stereo vision is proposed.
