| Abstract |
Belgium, regardless of what it has been called, has never been able to build a maritime tradition. There were two short prosperous periods. The first had to do with privateering, but war is never rewarding in the long run. Second, there was the growth stimulated by the Ostend Company, which proved that it was possible for commercial seafaring to flourish. The maritime powers, however, crippled its development. Later, the industrial sector enjoyed preference over maritime activities. |
