Abstract
Using data from the Norwegian and Oyashio Currents some common features of the dispersion of pelagic larvae and juveniles of bottom invertebrates from the continental shelf are discussed. Special attention is paid to changes in the vertical and horizontal distribution of the larvae as they are carried away from the continental shelf. The chances of metamorphosis while still in the plankton and of settlement of the juveniles in the bathyal and abyssal zones are also discussed on the basis of records of post-larval ophiuroids in the 3,000–4,000 m and 2,000–4,000 m layers and of juvenile spionids in the 4,000–7,000 m and 6,000–7,000 m layers beneath the Oyashio Current.
