Abstract
As acoustic particle motion has been shown to be an important sensory cue for many underwater animals, particle motion fields are frequently measured and reported on for studies on these taxa. However, few studies describe the biologically relevant directional information encoded within these fields. This chapter introduces measures of eccentricity in the context of particle motion, indicating how strong the directional cues in acoustic particle motion fields are. The measures of spectral and broadband eccentricity described here can be utilized for validating acoustic fields in experimental setups, in addition to providing insight into the ability of fishes and invertebrates to determine the directions of sound sources. With the development of measures – such as eccentricity – providing a quantitative language to report on particle motion directionality, researchers are better equipped to interpret the biological relevance of the particle motion fields animals are exposed to.
