| Abstract |
Studies on reproductive biology are essential for understanding the existence of organisms, providing crucial information on the ecology, evolutionary history, taxonomy and systematics of species. Gametogenesis, as the central process in sexual reproduction, allows us to unravel reproductive cycles and understand the mechanisms that regulate populations. Anthozoa, a diverse and ecologically important subphylum of Cnidaria, encompasses more than half of the species described in this phylum and is characterized by the wide variety of reproductive strategies of its organisms. Despite concentrating the majority of studies on reproduction in Cnidaria, knowledge about reproduction in Anthozoa groups is uneven, with notable gaps in clades such as Ceriantharia and Actiniaria. In this context, this study investigates aspects of sexual reproduction and gametogenesis in little-explored groups of Anthozoa, with a focus on the genus Edwardsiella (Hexacorallia, Actiniaria) and the subclass Ceriantharia. In addition to mapping gaps in the existing literature, the gametogenesis of Edwardsiella loveni (Carlgren, 1892) and of individuals belonging to six genera of Ceriantharia were analyzed. For the latter group, data on reproductive morphology were compared and used in phylogenetic reconstructions, seeking to identify phylogenetic signals associated with reproductive characters. The results contribute to expanding the knowledge base on sexual reproduction in Anthozoa, advancing the understanding of reproductive strategies and their possible phylogenetic links. |
