Meta-analysis of growth characteristics of deep-sea fishes from the Indian waters: A conservation perspective

Abstract
    Length-weight relationships (LWRs) and condition factors of fish are crucial parameters for examining the physiological status and habitat conditions. A literature survey of fishes found in the deep-sea environment beyond 200 m depth documented 205 length-weight relationships for 117 species belonging to 52 families and 20 orders of deep-sea Teleostei from the Indian marine waters. In addition, Fulton condition factor (KF) value of 12 species and the relative condition factor (Kn) value of 6 species were collated. The maximum investigations on the LWRs were found in 2018 and 2020 (year), Perciformes and Scombriformes (order), and Gempylidae (family). The mean slope (b) value of LWRs was found significantly different from the ideal value (3) indicating hypoallometric growth (b < 3). The linear equations are obtained after removing outliers by using the plot of log a (intercept) versus b for two species. The KF value of majority of deep-sea fishes was found less than 1 suggesting a leaner body, which is consistent with the prey-scarce and energy-limited environment of the deep-sea. This review is the first compilation of the growth characteristics of deep-sea fishes from the Indian waters, warranting more detailed studies on LWRs and condition factors for proper conservation and management strategies.
