| Abstract |
Strombidae (conches) is one of the family of gastropod, mollusk, which occupies intertidal area on seagrass meadow. This family is exploited by local communities during low tide to fulfil their daily need for protein, particularly when the sea is rough, and fish are rare because fishing activity is limited. This research was carried out in the intertidal area of Paperu, Saparua Island, Maluku Province, Eastern Indonesia in January 2022 to study species composition, sex ratio and growth pattern of conches. Samples of conches were collected by hand during low tide. Every individual of conches collected was identified, measured and then determined their sex. It was found that conches in the area consist of four species, namely Canarium labiatum, C. mutabile, C. urceus and Conomurex luhuanus. In general, female individuals are more numerous than male individuals in which three species i.e. C. labiatum, C. mutabile and C. urceus show significant deviation from the equal sex ratio 1:1. Results of length-weight relationship analysis showed that only C. labiatum has a negative allometric growth pattern while other three species of conches have isometric growth pattern. |
