Abstract
    Geographical distributions for two types of ice algal assemblages, "surface type" and "bottom type" are described for the Antarctic sector (35°E-45°E) around Lützow Holm Bay. The surface type was found in a wide belt in the outer pack ice while the bottom type was found in the narrow band of fast ice near the ice shelf or in the bay. The surface type was characterized by a thick snow cover on thin sea ice and the bottom type typically had thin snow cover on thick ice. The circumpolar continuity of meteorological conditions around the continent and similar floral compositions between our samples and samples collected near Palmer Peninsula by other investigators suggests that the similar distributional pattern may be common in other coastal regions of Antarctica.
