| Abstract |
The different meanings of shipwrecks to different groups leads to conflict as well as agreement. The desire to protect a wreck as marine habitat may clash with archaeological excavation. Treasure hunting and selling the finds clashes with archaeology. Archaeology and tourism, as well as salvage, may clash with fishing; fishing trawls have been shown to be very damaging to wrecks, destroying the values that others hold dear. The status of a wreck as grave may be the impetus for forbidding anyone to access it. The conflicts that range globally include clashes with modern salvagers who completely remove sunken war graves in defiance of international laws and rules; fishing trawls have destroyed and damaged many wrecks in waters as deep as a few thousand feet. The arguments and agreements between the multiple values and different perspectives are particularly powerful when looking at treasure hunting and commercial salvage |
