| Abstract |
A new species of the snapping shrimp genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798, A. harii, is described based on material collected from Cochin estuary, Kerala, southwest coast of India. Specimens of the new species were collected as bycatch from stake nets operated at approximately 3 meters depth. The new species is assigned to the A. edwardsii (Audouin, 1826) group. Alpheus harii spec. nov. is morphologically similar to A. nipa Banner & Banner, 1985 and A. cyanoteles Yeo & Ng, 1997, both currently assigned to the A. euphrosyne De Man, 1897–A. microrhynchus De Man, 1897 species complex, but differs from the latter two species in a number of characters including a distinct rostral carina and adrostral furrows reaching posterior to the eye level, the unarmed ventromesial margin of the first article of the antennular peduncle and the presence of a distinct transverse ridge on the mesial surface of the major chela. A BLAST search against GenBank revealed that the 16S rRNA gene sequence most closely matching the new species was A. cyanoteles Yeo & Ng, 1997, followed by A. microrhynchus De Man, 1897; however, the calculated genetic divergence values were high (>11.9%), suggesting that these species are not closely related to the new species. |
