Abstract
Two new species of asteroid-associated polychaete (Polynoidae: Macellicephalinae) belonging to a new genus were collected during deep-sea expeditions in the western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean. Ovatocirra, new genus, is distinguished from other Macellicephalinae genera by the following combination of characters: 18–22 body segments; median antenna present; lateral antennae and frontal filament absent; pharynx with numerous papillae and lacking jaws; 9–10 pairs of elytra, smooth or with uneven texture on exposed, non-overlapping surfaces; and ovate to subovate ventral cirri from segment 3 onward. Ovatocirra flavida, new species, and Ovatocirra shinkaiae, new species, are distinguished based on morphology and molecular data from three genetic markers (COI, 16S, and 18S). In addition, Macellicephala grimaldii is transferred to Ovatocirra as Ovatocirra grimaldii (Fauvel, 1913), new combination. This study contributes to the knowledge of the biodiversity and biogeography of deep-water asteroid-associated polychaetes in the Indo-West Pacific, highlighting the importance of continued exploration and taxonomic research in these regions.
