Abstract
The first gizzard of A. punctata is lined by a thin inert cuticle joining a sixty of voluminous teeth. These gizzard teeth are constituted of a non-sclerified chitinoproteic matrix perforated by a dense system of minute cytoplasmic filaments. On the basis of the rules of homology clearly stated by Remane and of the great similarity of chemical composition, the teeth of the gizzard of Opisthobranchia Anaspidea appear to be homologous with the gastric shield of Bivalvia and with the gastric cuticle of Protobranchia. These different cuticular formations contain active hydrolytic enzymes and certainly play a similar function in the digestive process.
