| Abstract |
The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is native to Japan and is classified into a number of local races of populations on the basis of differences in morphological and physiological characteristics. An account is given of the development of cupped oyster culture in European coastal waters, outlining case histories in Portugal, France, Holland, UK, Ireland, Denmark, and Germany. Now, naturally reproducing populations of C.gigas exist, whose larvae can move along the European coasts with a speed (in northern direction) of at least 8-10 km per day. Much uncertainty still exists regarding the genetic variability in the introduced stocks. |
