Abstract
A review is made of functional morphology of shells of burrowing pelecypods in order to study the differences between marine and freshwater habitats. Findings indicate that most antipredatory and some sediment-related adaptations are rare and poorly developed in freshwater pelecypods as compared to the widespread occurrence of these characteristics in marine forms. The biography of freshwater assemblages are also examined.
