Abstract
Sea-water intrusion is the main constraint limiting the full exploitation of the Nile Delta aquifer in Egypt. In some demand areas, groundwater may be the only feasible water resource but fear of more intrusion or upconing prevents the pumping of the aquifer. An approach is presented to tackle this problem. The method is based on pumping fresh and salt simultaneously from the pumping well. The amounts of pumpage are relatively dependent in such a way so that the fresh-/salt-water interface can be kept stationary. The relation between the amounts of fresh-water discharge and salt-water discharge is formulated. The approach presented can be applied in the case of development of coastal aquifers. The approach is very useful to maximize the utilization of the Nile Delta aquifer to achieve the future water requirements especially in the outer fringes of the Delta where the sea-water intrusion problem is very critical.
