Abstract
    Use of quinaldine to anaesthetize penaeid shrimp during handling and transport to reduce injury from jumping was tested at various dosages and exposure periods. The shrimp became anaestetized when exposed to quinaldine and did regain normalcy when removed from its influence. However, the level required for an anaeshetic effect was of a magnitude that caused the chemical to produce death to some shrimp. Shrimp became excited following exposure to the chemical and the chemical apparently acted as a stressor which induced spontaneous necrosis. Use of the chemical in shrimp for routine handling purposes is not suggested.
