Abstract
    Steroidogenesis in vertebrates and in insects is under hierarchical control of the brain in which special nerve cells produce peptides that function as glandotropic hormones. In addition, glandostatic signal peptides are made. The hierarchy of endocrine control in vertebrates has three levels, the hierarchy in insects only two. A special feature of many insect species is that their steroid synthesis is controlled both by direct innervation and by neurosecretion. Apparently, insects made use of a more versatile system to control the level of steroid hormones than vertebrates.
