Abstract
From 1980 to 1989, 372 samples of fouling organisms were collected from ships, piers, buoys and
mariculture cages in Hong Kong and adjacent waters. Seventy species of polychaetes have been recorded. Hydroides elegans, H. dirampha, H. inornata and Pomatoleios kraussii were the dominant species. These are also major biofoulers in Hong Kong, the maximum recorded wet weight of these organisms being 20.34 kg·m-2. The distributions of the species in relation to tidal level, salinity gradient and degree of tidal exposure were studied and corresponding indicator species for these different environmental conditions identified.
